Call yourself a Canadian?

Did you vote? I'm not talking about that election, nor that one. I'm talking about this one.

Yeah, I voted. But it's going to take a long time to get over the old one. "Da dum da da da DAAAAAAAAA!!! (da dum da da da da), da dum da da da da-NAA!!!!"

Kristine, LOL yourself! I just about died when I read your comment. How funny. And knititch, here's a Canadian sociology/history lesson for you:

CBC (Canadian Broadcasting Corporation) has televised hockey games on Saturday nights since 1952. The theme song changed a few times but since 1968 it has been the same song - you can hear it here:
www.youtube.com/watch?v=4ta5MWh_bUI

(Blogger interferes with that link so I couldn't embed it, sorry.)

The CBC's licence for that theme expired this year, and because CBC is a public institution, they couldn't justify the cost to buy rights to the song. CTV picked up that theme, leaving CBC to find another.

They had a contest where viewers could submit original compositions, competing for $100,000 and bragging rights.

15,000 submissions were entered, and the one I liked, won! Woot!

As Gwen says, though, it will take a long time to get used to - we all miss the old theme.

Here endeth the lesson.

See, I may have to watch hockey on CTV more, just to have the anthem still in my home. I was impressed with the work people put in to the new anthems, but I just kept wanting the old one back ....

Maybe for the americans it's more like Take Me out to the Ball Game, or the Monday Night NFL theme song? Although probably not as many non-sports fans could recognize those songs as recognize the hockey anthem in Canada. Coast to coast, it's Saturday night baby! Now Shan, try to explain Don Cherry.

Kate, I think the Hockey Night In Canada theme song is comparable to "the Star Spangled Banner" in the States. I imagine that many Canadians know the HNIC theme song better than our nat'l anthem!
